Dublin Fortune Cup Qualifier

30th November 2008
The day most of us has been waiting for has finally arrived: today is most people final chance to qualify for the Fortune Cup Finals! Tele-Dad is still the top pick of the day, with Lightsworn next in line waiting to take the crown.

Today will see some of Ireland's greatest players go head-to-head. Top competitors here today include top ranked PJ Tierney, Stephen Lynam, Stephen Harrison Daly, Salem Teko, Tim Chen, Paul Sweeney, and many more. Many more duelists have braved the cold to travel here today to the Wynn's Hotel, each to make his or her bid to qualify for the Finals in January. Today we can expect to see three big decks take center stage. Anybody playing a rogue strategy better be ready for them.

The first is TeleDAD, bolstered by the release of Plaguespreader Zombie. Thanks to Plaguespreader and its synergy with Dark Grepher the deck is now even faster, and many of the TeleDAD duelists who saw previous success with that deck will opt to run this new version simply because it's extremely familiar; it's not hard to slip two copies of Plaguespreader into an existing build.

Next up is Lightsworn. The build is basic but now with a new power in Plaguespreader Zombies. The most successful builds will likely run Card of Safe Return as well with Charge of the Light Brigade, Solar Recharge, and end phase Lightsworn effects loading the graveyard, Plaguespreader is a snap to summon.

A spatter of Gladitor Beasts and Anti-meta decks can also been spotted among with decksheets. With 44 players we kicked off at 12:45 with 6 rounds ahead of us. Here we go with Fortune Cup Dublin!

  • It all came down to this: two duelists, each wielding TeleDAD, one with Plaguespreader Zombie and one without. PJ Tierney ranked 1st in Ireland and Stephen Lynam rank 2nd. You couldn't have asked for a better finals.

Stephen won the roll and opened with just a set card to his back row. Telegraphing a bad hand or setting up to attempt to summon the newly released Gorz. PJ's opening move was a little more productive. He activated Allure, drew two cards, and removed his Dark Grepher from play. Followed next by a Destiny Draw on Destiny Hero - Malicious. Stephen wishing at this point that he could trade hands with PJ. A second Allure hit the field and Snipe Hunter was removed as a cost. Setting on to his backrow he ended his turn.

Stephen special summons Dark Grepher, discarding Destiny Hero - Malicious as a cost, retaining priority to remove Destiny Hero - Malicious to special summon one from his deck in defence mode. An attack by Dark Grepher drops PJ to 6300 life and he drops Gorz from his hand and special summons a token with 1700 attack. A Phoenix Wing Wind Blast sends Stephen's Destiny Hero - Malicious back to the top of his deck, costing PJ his third allure. Main Phase two sees Stephens Dark Grepher traded for a Caius, removing Gorz from play bring PJ to 5300 life.

Pj opens his next turn with Heavy Storm, destroying the set Torrential Tribute. Stratos comes down to search out a Destiny Hero - Plasma. Destiny Hero - Malicious comes to the field by removing one from the grave and all three are traded away for Destiny Hero - Plasma, taking Caius as its equip. A successful attack drops Stephen to 4900. Pj ends his turn with a single set to his spell/trap zone.

Again Stephen's only move in his turn is a single set card to the backrow. PJ removes his second Destiny Hero - Malicious to special summon one from his deck in defence mode, normal summons Plaguespreader Zombie and synchro summons for a Colossal Fighter. An attack by Colossal fighter is chained to by Emergency Teleported defence Krebons but Pj continues to attack into it. With Destiny Hero - Plasma it could not activate any effect and was destroyed. Stephen drops to 1800 life and he drops Gorz onto the field with a token at 3100 attack.

Stephen opens his next turn with an Allure, a ruling check on Plasma v Plasma and Destiny Hero - Plasma was removed. Gorz was switched to defence mode and a set monster from Stephen ended his turn. PJ activate Monster Reborn on Destiny Hero - Malicious, a card to the top would bring back Plaguespreader Zombie and Red Dragon Archfiend would end that game. PJ takes one up in the finals.

Side Decking was short with Stephen opting for four cards and PJ for also four. Shuffle-shuffle-cut-cut and away we go into game two with Stephen opting to begin. A Destiny Draw with Destiny Hero - Malicious signaled a better hand than last game for Stephen. Summoning a Krebons passing play to PJ.

PJ's opening move was Allure, drew two cards, and removed his Dark Grepher from play. Followed next by a Destiny Draw on Destiny Hero - Malicious. Destiny Hero - Malicious was removed to special summon one from his deck in defence mode. Again played Allure, drew two cards, and removed his Plaguespreader Zombie from play. A Brain Control bringing PJ to 7200 life took control of Krebons. Thought Ruler Archfiend was summoned and attacked direct. Stephen was down to 5300 life. PJ ending his turn with a double set.

Play was back to Stephen who quickly removed his Destiny Hero - Malicious to get one from his deck in defence mode. It was traded for Caius but ran into a Solemn Judgment. Pj was now on 3600. This was just a means for Stephen to summon Dark Armed Dragon, Krebons removed to destroy PJs set Scapegoat but this was chained. Caius was removed to destroy Thought Ruler Archfiend and PJ went down to 3 scapegoat tokens.

It was back to PJ, he simply removed his Destiny Hero - Malicious to get one from his deck in defence mode and set a spell/trap to his backrow. Destiny Hero - Malicious also came out from Stephen with a Stratos from hand to destroy the bluffed Heavy Storm. An Emergency Teleport for Krebons saw Red Dragon Archfiend hit the field. Red Dragon Archfiend wiped out the defence monsters and Stephen thinks he attacks for game but PJ asks the question that we will all come across every duel from now on, "Who attacks first?". Stephen says Stratos and PJ responds with Gorz but drops to 1800 life. The token is special summoned in defence mode and Gorz gets attacked over by Dark Armed Dragon for 100 damage.

Game finishing quickly next turn with not one but two Dark Armed Dragons by PJ. Enough to take out Stephens field and attack for the game. Straight two - nil victory. PJ Tierney Fortune Cup Dublin Champion.
